Brass Electrical Hardware Installation Guide
Installing your new PlatePrestige brass electrical hardware is a straightforward process designed to integrate seamlessly with standard North American (US) electrical systems. Our products are engineered to fit directly into existing US standard electrical wall boxes, which are typically pre-installed in homes. This guide provides general instructions for a safe and successful installation.
Important Safety Note: Electrical work can be dangerous. If you are not comfortable performing electrical installations, or if you are unsure about any steps, we strongly recommend consulting a qualified electrician. Always turn off power at the circuit breaker before beginning any electrical work.
Before You Begin: What You'll Need
- Your new PlatePrestige brass switch, dimmer, or outlet
- Matching brass screws (included with your product)
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver (optional, for some wire terminals)
- Wire strippers (if cutting or re-stripping wires)
- Voltage tester (highly recommended for safety)
- Electrical tape (optional, for extra insulation)
Step-by-Step Installation Instructions (General)
These steps provide a general overview. Always refer to local electrical codes and the specific wiring instructions provided with your product (if applicable) or our detailed Wiring Guide for precise guidance.
-
Turn Off Power
Go to your home's main electrical panel (breaker box) and locate the circuit breaker that controls the power to the specific area where you will be working. Flip the breaker to the "OFF" position. Verify that the power is off using a voltage tester on the existing wires before touching any connections.
-
Remove Old Device (If Applicable)
Carefully unscrew and remove the old wall plate and electrical device (switch, dimmer, or outlet). Gently pull the device out from the wall box. Note how the wires are connected before disconnecting them. You may want to take a photo for reference.
-
Prepare Wires
Ensure the ends of your electrical wires are properly stripped (usually about 1/2 inch or 0.5 inches of exposed copper). If not, use wire strippers to expose the appropriate length of copper conductor.
-
Connect Your PlatePrestige Hardware
Connect the wires to your new PlatePrestige device. The wiring configuration will depend on the specific product (switch, dimmer, outlet) and your home's electrical setup (e.g., single-pole, 3-way). Refer to our Wiring Guide for detailed diagrams and explanations of common wiring types.
- Ground Wire (Green or bare copper): Connect to the green or bare screw terminal on the device.
- Neutral Wire (White): Typically connects to a silver screw terminal on outlets. Most standard switches and some dimmers may not require a neutral wire connection directly at the switch. Always check your product specifications.
- Hot/Live Wires (Black or Red): Connect to the brass or black screw terminals.
- Traveler Wires (for 3-way/4-way installations): Connect to specifically marked traveler terminals. Consult the Wiring Guide for multi-location control diagrams.
Important for PlatePrestige Single Pole Dimmers: Our single pole dimmer may have a plastic module housing and specific grounding instructions. If your dimmer does not have an exposed metal yoke for grounding, ensure the connected light fixture is properly grounded. Always follow the specific instructions included with your dimmer.
Ensure all wire connections are tight and secure. You can wrap electrical tape around the terminals for added insulation if desired, though it's often not required if connections are secure within the box.
-
Mount the Device
Gently fold the wires into the electrical wall box. Carefully push the PlatePrestige device into the wall box and secure it with the provided mounting screws. Ensure the device is straight. Do not overtighten.
-
Install the Wall Plate
Attach the brass wall plate over the installed device using the matching lacquered brass screws. Tighten the screws until the plate is snug and flush with the wall. Be careful not to overtighten, as this can damage the plate, the device, or the wall.
-
Restore Power & Test
Go back to your main electrical panel and turn the circuit breaker back to the "ON" position. Test your newly installed PlatePrestige hardware to ensure it functions correctly and safely.
